Zowhy.com – Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto is optimistic that the digital economy in Indonesia in the next four years or to be precise in 2025 will be able to reach US$ 124 billion or equivalent to Rp. 1,773 trillion (exchange rate of Rp. 14,299 per US$). The reason is, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates the growth and transactions of the digital economy in the country.
Airlangga said, since the pandemic spread in various parts of the world, the digital economy has become a new economic force. Indonesia is a country with the highest digital economy development in the Southeast Asia (ASEAN) region.
“Since the digitalization pandemic has continued to develop, including internet banking, electronic money, payment systems. This payment optimization increases the contribution of the digital economy, especially in the financial inclusion sector. This value is expected to reach US$ 124 billion in 2025,” said Airlangga at the opening of the 2021 National Fintech Month (BNF) and the virtual Cekfintech.id Grand Launching, Thursday (11/11/2021).
According to him, for the ASEAN region, Indonesia ranks first in accelerating the digital economy with a growth of 11%. In addition, Indonesia has the largest market with a share of 44% in the region.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused people to experience behavioral changes from analog to digital, and the digital economy to become a new force. Moreover, we are the highest in ASEAN with 11% growth,” he said.
Airlangga added, the acceleration of Indonesia’s digital economy growth could not be separated from the internet penetration that took place in the country which reached 78.6%. This internet penetration is also supported by the size of the population in the country.
This internet penetration, if supported by infrastructure development such as the 5G internet network, the development of the internet of things (IoT) and blockchain, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) will further enhance the digital ecosystem in the country.

“The development of the digital ecosystem is expected to be able to make various breakthroughs and innovations in order to be able to access all financial sectors, the economy, and all sectors that the community is involved in,” he concluded.
